ItisnottheobjectofthisworktogiveadeionofDerbyshire,norofanyoftheremarkableplacesthroughwhichtheirroutethitherlay;Oxford,Blenheim,Warwick,Kenilworth,Birmingham,etc.aresufficientlyknown.AsmallpartofDerbyshireisallthepresentconcern.TothelittletownofLambton,thesceneofMrs.Gardinersformerresidence,andwhereshehadlatelylearnedsomeacquaintancestillremained,theybenttheirsteps,afterhavingseenalltheprincipalwondersofthecountry;andwithinfivemilesofLambton,ElizabethfoundfromherauntthatPemberleywassituated.Itwasnotintheirdirectroad,normorethanamileortwooutofit.Intalkingovertheirroutetheeveningbefore,Mrs.Gardinerexpressedaninclinationtoseetheplaceagain.Mr.Gardinerdeclaredhiswillingness,andElizabethwasappliedtoforherapprobation.

Mrs.Gardinerabusedherstupidity.“Ifitweremerelyafinehouserichlyfurnished,”
